What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a restoration that completely covers the visible portions of a tooth. It prevents further damage to the vulnerable tooth while simultaneously restoring its function and appearance. The restoration is carefully designed to replicate the size, shape, and structure of a healthy tooth. A crown can be made of porcelain, amalgam, or resin, depending on your needs and aesthetic preferences.

Why Would I Need a Tooth Crown?

Dental crowns can effectively serve restorative or cosmetic purposes. We frequently use crowns to repair significant damage that can't be covered by a dental filling. Whatever your specific needs, we strive to provide you with a premium, custom-fitted restoration. Our team uses crowns to:

  • Restore fractured or chipped teeth
  • Protect a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Support a dental bridge
  • Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Preserve a weak tooth
  • Complete a dental implant

Implant-Supported Crowns to Replace a Missing Tooth

If you're missing a tooth, we offer dental implants to fill the gap in your smile. A dental implant includes a titanium post that functions like a natural tooth root and stimulates your jawbone, which prevents bone loss and preserves your facial structure. Your implant fuses with your gums and jawbone, which allows it to stabilize an implant-supported crown. The restoration directly attaches to an abutment that connects to your implant post, providing you with a realistic replacement tooth.

Providing You With a Custom-Fitted Crown

To receive a dental crown in our Hayward office, you'll need to make two appointments. During your first visit, our dentist will evaluate the affected tooth. We'll use x-rays to detect any fractures, decay, or other damage that is invisible to the naked eye before planning your treatment. Following our assessment, we'll take an impression and either craft your custom dental crown in-house with our fastmill.io™ milling machine or send the design to a trusted lab, which fabricates your crown. For those who might need multiple crowns, we use a study model to show you how the crowns will look.

It typically takes two weeks for the lab to create your traditional crown. In the meantime, our dentist places a temporary crown to prevent additional damage while you wait for your permanent restoration. You'll return for your second appointment as soon as your crown is ready. We'll make sure the crown fits correctly and is comfortable before setting it in place with dental cement. Once your crown is in place, you'll be able to eat, drink, and speak comfortably.

How Do I Maintain My Tooth Crown?

To ensure your tooth crown lasts, it's essential to maintain excellent dental hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing. Preventing any significant buildup of plaque around the restoration reduces your chances of developing periodontal (gum) disease, which may put the afflicted tooth at risk.

We recommend avoiding chewing hard items, such as ice, hard candies, and certain nuts. Visiting our dentist twice a year for your biannual checkups is crucial. We'll make sure your restoration is not damaged and remove any bacteria buildup. If you play a high-contact sport, we strongly suggest wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard to protect your crown and the rest of your smile.
